Comliteracy in action...

Comliteracy

In 2006 the CMA submitted a proposal to OFCOM to use Community Radio as a tool for promoting Media Literacy based on the theory that Community Radio has a greater personal reach into UK society than other broadcasters, educational institutions and media agencies. The proposal outlined a ‘national project to use Community Radio as a tool to raise awareness and understanding of Media Literacy issues’.

As a result of this proposal the CMA ran ‘Comliteracy’, a Community Radio Media Literacy project.
This project used Community Radio as a tool to raise awareness, skills and understanding around media literacy issues.

Community Radio stations were invited to apply for funding (£1000) to carry out the following activities:

a.      Produce and broadcast Public Service Announcements (PSAs) highlighting media literacy issues.

b.      Produce and broadcast a media literacy programme (discussion, phone-in etc).

c.     Run a Media Literacy awareness raising workshop for staff and volunteers.
