Community Media Association response to Ofcom's Community
Radio Fund consultation
Introduction
This consultation examines the options concerning the
management and administration of a Community Radio Fund,
which Ofcom has powers to establish under the Communications
Act 2003. Government (specifically, the Department for
Culture, Media & Sport) is providing some financial support
to be distributed to Community Radio stations through
such a fund.
Background
Section 359 of the Communications Acts says that Ofcom
may make such grants as they consider appropriate to Community
Radio licensees. Ofcom decided that it would be appropriate
to consult on the precise nature of this Fund before it
is possible for grants to be made from it.
Process
Following the end of the consultation period, Ofcom intends
to set up the Community Radio Fund Panel and publish a
statement early in 2005.
