Radio regulator Ofcom has announced the award of a single community radio licence in the Crewe and Nantwich area of South Cheshire.

The licence has been awarded to Nantwich-based The Cat, who will provide a service for five years across the two towns and surrounding rural areas.

The Cat began broadcasting in 2008 and has operated several RSL stations as well as a permanent online broadcast since its launch.

RedShift Radio, who have been providing an internet radio and RSL service to the Crewe area since 2011, were not awarded a licence this time round.

More information on the reasons behind the award can be found on Ofcom’s website.

This marks the first award in Region 5 of the third round of Ofcom community radio licensing, covering the North West of England and most of Yorkshire. 38 applications were received five months ago, and 36 are still to be considered.
