The second annual Community Radio Awards takes place this Saturday 23 September in Bristol. The 2016 Station of the Year, Ujima Radio is hosting the Awards evening.

The Awards celebrate, champion and promote the amazing work of community radio throughout the UK. This year over 70 stations have entered in 16 categories. The evening will culminate in the announcement of Bronze, Silver and Gold for Station of the Year 2017. The five nominations are Manchester’s All FM, Raidió Fáilte in Belfast, who won silver in 2016, Ribble FM in Clitheroe, Somer Valley FM in North East Somerset and Wycombe Sound broadcasting from High Wycombe.

Martin Steers, who founded the Community Radio Awards says, “The response this year has been amazing and I can tell you many of the judges have fed back that they have been blown away by the quality of many of the entries.”

The special broadcast will be anchored by Dom Chambers and produced by Pete Helmore. Dom, a well-known advocate for community media, who hosted last year’s inaugural awards, says, “After spending my summer visiting grassroots broadcasters around the UK, I am delighted to be presenting this special programme for inRadio. These awards have become the highlight of the calendar in our radio sector and it promises to be a great evening. The show will be a true celebration of tremendous audio innovation as well as powerful impact.”

Dom previews the awards this week in his regular show Third Sector on inRadio at 12pm featuring interviews with Martin Steers, Ujima Radio’s Roger Griffith and the Community Media Association.

Martin Steers adds, “It’s fantastic that InRadio and Radio Today are looking to support the Community Radio Awards by providing coverage of the awards, it’s a fantastic opportunity for the entire radio sector, including the thousands of people involved in Community Radio to hear as the night unfolds and we reveal those who receive Gold at this year’s awards.

The 2-hour awards special can be heard from 7pm on Saturday 23 September www.radiotoday.co.uk/inradio/
