Dom Chambers, Station Manager at Somer Valley FM and CMA Council member, has posted a new edition of his Third Sector Show podcast ahead of UNESCO’s World Radio Day. The 7th annual World Radio Day this year highlights the links between sports and radio and asks how sports journalism might better reflect the diversity of sports culture away from the mainstream spotlight on elite sport.
Dom explores the relationship between sports and broadcasting at a local level with Ian Nockolds. Ian built a strong grassroots sports offer on Somer Valley FM which was recognised by achieving Gold for the Sports Show of the Year in the 2016 Community Radio Awards.
With customary insight and passion, Ian tells the show, “Commercial broadcasters need no help, they need no publicity when it comes to sports broadcasting. TalkSport, Sky, the BBC do a fantastic job but at the grassroots, where communities are a bit more disconnected, the community broadcaster can champion local clubs and local sporting activity in a way that bigger broadcasters cannot. Even if it adds four or five people to the gate that can make a huge financial difference to a club and make the supporters walk a little bit taller. You can’t put a price on that.”
Gateway 97.8 has long been a supporter of World Radio Day and Station Manager Danny Lawrence BEM (and CMA Council member) tells Dom about how the station links with the sporting community in the Basildon area. Their plans for World Radio Day include empowering young people with a voice and editorial control.
Each podcast Dom highlights at least one impact story from his visits to community, independent and grassroots media organisations across the UK. In August 2017 he called in on East Coast FM in East Lothian, just south of Edinburgh. Here he met Gillian who tells her story about how training, and the strong welcome volunteers get at the radio station, has made a big difference to her.
