Ofcom has outlined a new application process for short-term restricted service licences (SRSLs).
Under the new process, applications should now be submitted by email. Other changes include requiring applicants to provide more detailed information to help us better assess whether they have appropriate processes for ensuring compliance with broadcasting standards.
Ofcom has also opened the window for SRSL applications to run radio stations on any dates between 3 May and 7 June 2019. Ofcom expects to receive a large number of applications because Ramadan falls within this period.
As in previous years, given the high demand for SRSLs and the limited FM frequencies available, Ofcom expect to allocate licences by way of a draw.
The new application process is set out in detail in Ofcom’s statement; it is recommended that all potential applicants read this carefully before submitting an application to broadcast during this period.
Those wishing to provide a service between 3 May and 7 June 2019 are asked to submit their application between 5 November and 23 November 2018.
